A weekend in the Michigan backcountry

A photoblog of the UMSC gang's trip to the biostation at Pellston, MI in Feb 2005. It was a weekend well spent cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, R&R and enjoying great food!

A few random sights from the Michigan back-country...

ghostly? serene? take your pick.

Sights from Hartwick Pines, enroute to the UMSC biostation.

The place was really filled with pine trees... and lots of snow

Meg at the Hemlock grove near the biostation.

and here's Mika, all decked in red!

Thats really a fallen tree... with the root system about 9ft in diameter!

Earlier at the biostation, Mika and Patty.

Admiring the gorge... Jim and Rick.

Snow-shoeing was a blast! It was my first time, and I am going to do it again, for sure!

Hiking down the gorge...

Meg making sure she's got a footing on the slope

The bottom of the gorge was a spectacular sight.

The bog at the bottom of the gorge looked surreal...

Listening to the silence...

Mr. Snowman, on the edge of the gorge with Jim, Meg, Vijay and Rick. (CW)

Rick and Jim trying to roll the snowball to the egde...

Jim letting the snowball roll down...

Perfect tumble!

and CRASH.............!

And thats me standing on the frozen lake Douglas with an ice-fisherman's shack in the background.
